phonezoo.com has free ringtones, and sends them to you by text, but they also send ads occasionally by text.
is there a better website that is also free, but doesnt waste all my texts with advertisements?

I never heard of any ad's when i had my chocolate and was using phonezoo. But i would say phonezoo is your best bet if you cant find any other resources.

Question ... on the site listed above can you create custom ringtones and then send it to the handset ..... or is it somewhat similar to nextel having to use software and data cable ?!?!?

No, its not like nextel with the data cable, all ringtones are sent via text message.
