1. Are you overclocking the CPU?
2. Where are the fans located?
3. The ones in the front should be intake and rears should be exhaust.

I recommend a liquid cooler.

Ok...Like Master LU said, there could be a dozen possibilities what can be wrong. You said you are using XP. Which one (home, corporate, pro)?
Did you install symantec: PC anywhere ? Did you just get a router installed ?
Give a few more details on what you did before this happened, this way we can narrow it down. You can also go into safe mode (f8) under administrator, and go into control panel, user accounts and see how they are listed as. Let us know and we can fix this for you. ~D

also try using another utility to read your temps like motherboard monitor 5 it might be reporting the temp wrong.

Yeah I agree with Drake on the Thermal Grease. You would be surprised what that stuff can do. Also on the "Getting a Second opinion". I would definitely run a second program on that.
On what Aleem said, be sure that those fans are in a "Pull and Push Sequence", or you will be getting Hot-Spots all over the place. ~D

@drake: downloading that monitor app now will post results and i put the whole packet of grease on but i may get a different heatsink soon so i'll get a chance to re-apply does the type of thermal grease matter?

@aleem: not overclocking the cpu (yet) and fans are at front bottom in front of HD's and rear top under psu and of course the cpu fan am also looking into the liquid cooling

@donte: i verified the airflow it is coming in through the front and exhausting out of the rear also going to use a different program to check the temps and see about putting on a new application of thermal grease

@everyone: thank you for the replies your help is greatly appreciated i am trying to get ahold of a good camera so i can take pics of my pc to help explain everything

Ok good, so the airflow is checked off the list. Yeah post up the specs after you run the diagnostics. Here are some details you asked about the thermal grease.

Thermal grease pads - Thermal pads melt with heat, conforming to the surfaces of the CPU and heat sink, then stiffen when they cool. They are sufficient solutions but not considered outstanding.

Silicone and zinc-based - Thermal grease usually comes in tube and is a white paste. It is not heat conductive itself, but does fill potential gaps between the surfaces, providing a satisfactory interface.

Ceramic-based - Though ceramic paste is normally considered mid-grade, one popular brand of ceramic thermal grease has outperformed silver-based greases in several independent tests. Maximum performance is reached after several cycles of normal use; using the system as needed then turning it off to cool. Once this period is completed, the system can be left on 24/7 if desired. The advantage of ceramic thermal grease over silver-based grease is that ceramic grease is not electrically conductive.

Silver-based - Thermal grease contains highly conductive metal particles. This thermal grease is excellent for conducting heat but can also conduct electricity. If accidentally applied to CPU pins or motherboard circuitry, it can cause an electrical short. Caution is advised when applying metal-based thermal grease. Used correctly, however, this type of thermal grease is generally considered superior.

Do not mix different types of thermal grease. Whenever a heat sink is removed from a CPU, both surfaces must be thoroughly cleaned and new thermal grease applied before reinstalling. Rubbing alcohol can be used to safely remove most types of thermal compounds.

That is one good looking machine.
I gotta ask....
How much have you dumped into it so far ?

Oh by the way, did you ever run the diagnostics with the other program ? I was wondering if heat was still an issue.

I tried using MBM5 but it apparently does not support D975XBX. And also from what I have read is discontinued. I have since ran speedfan with similar results. And now downloading SANDRA to give it a try. Hopefully I can find a really good deal on a X6800. As far as money invested in the machine. I believe it is around $2,000 in the tower alone. Not including the two dvd burners and the floppy drive which I already had in another computer.

BTW: I gotta admit I did have help in the beginning of this project from specv (The person I bought the case, board, cpu, and heatsink from. ) and afew others who made suggestions on components. If any of those people are reading this I sincerely apologize for not mentioning you. However my memory is not great.
